May I?
In the last 24 hours, when have you heard that phrase used? Has any family member, friend, or professional asked you a question starting with the word May instead of the word Can?
This auxiliary verb, “May,” differs from the seemingly interchangeable verb “Can.” The word “Can” is a proper verb standing by itself.
“May” sounds much more formal, asking permission while “Can” is more direct, casual, and assuming.
Our world is full of turmoil. Even if you don’t watch the news, you may encounter our universal anger while driving or shopping. We need more kindness in our world.
May we begin spreading kindness by intentionally adding the word “May” to any and all requests?
