When we are hungry, we know to eat.
To avoid the state of hunger, we eat healthy meals at regular times.
When we are thirsty, we know to drink.
To avoid the state of thirst, we drink water throughout the day.
And yet, we do not acknowledge overwhelm until we are under it all. It is similar to waiting to address hunger and thirst after our body is emaciated and dehydrated. Then we either race to a nearby medical facility or if it is too late, others race us to one.
Why do we do this to ourselves?
Why do we not recognize the beginning of emotional drain? And do we know what to do at the first sign of emotional ‘leakage?’ How do we refill our emotional tank?
I am guilty of this. Driven, there always seems to be one more project to address, one more problem to fix, one more… and so it goes. This process continues until I am totally and completely emotionally drained. My family recognizes the signs and stay out of the way and I emotionally crawl back into myself.
Lately, I have been working on the warning signs of low levels of emotional strength. For me, I have an entire toolkit to fill my emotional tank – most of which I seldom use and often prescribe!
Walking outside has been a God-send. Breathing in fresh air, movement all seem to help. Of course, Qi Gong and Tapping are incredible resources as well. And building ‘emotional bubbles’ around my body to protect it from others who tap into my emotions has been beneficial.
Again, though it’s identifying what needs to be done on a consistent basis to avoid the panic of emotional overwhelm. Similar to regular meals and drinking water, I need daily exercises to not get to emotional overwhelm.
Daily, I need to draw the bubble around me. Daily, I need my walk outside. Daily, I need to tap.
Daily, I need Qi Gong. Daily, I need to reach out to others to tell them about my issues. Daily, I need my physical rest. Daily I need to avoid panic triggering information like the news.
Yes, I need to incorporate daily emotional habits similar to the daily habits of eating, drinking, and resting to complete my wholeness.
